Diver Profile - Tim McDonald (Extreme Spearfishing & Adventure)

Extreme is the only word to describe this man. A days diving begins at 3.30am and finished at 11.00pm that night. No location is too far, too sharky, too dirty or too deep. Tim was an obvious choice for inclusion as a RIFFE Diver. Tim's is a true natural talent and his diving andspearfishing skills are exceptional. He has taken some amazing fish with riffe spearguns in the relatively short time he has been spearfishing, yet his humility and willingness to learn more means that he is only going to become better with time - which is a scary prospect if you are a fish!

Always willing to help "up and coming" divers and give back to the way of life he loves so much. A valued friend and dive budding and an integral part of the RIFFE Diver team.

History

I have always had a passion for the ocean. My first word as a child was “Water”. When I was 10 I saved up all the money I earned from a paper run and bought a boat, that I would fish in when ever my parents would tow it to the water for me. As I grew up I started surfing, a sport wich became a great passion in my life.

I started Spearfishing 10 years ago, the reason for starting came one afternoon when I was down the coast surfing. The surf was tiny and a few friends were down at Kingscliffe trying out Spearfishing and asked me to come along.  As the surf was flat I thought I would give it a go. That first day with a hand spear I shot a 1.5kg bream and some other fish and thought this could be a great thing to do when it is too flat to surf. But over the next couple of months I dived a few other times and it wasn’t long before I was 100% hooked on Spearfishing and my main passion of surfing was now just an after thought.

I think one of the reasons I love Spearfishing so much is the continual challenge it offers. Every time you dive there is a new challenge. The type of diving I enjoy most is chasing big Lutjanis and other reef fish in deeper water. I find this offers a huge personal challenge as well as the team dynamic involved in accepting this challenge.

RIFFE Gear

I use the Riffe products because they just work. I was using RIFFE spearguns long before I became a RIFFE Diver. The Riffe Euro is the most accurate speargun I have ever used. I enjoy tracking fish with it and find the extra weight in the stock able to absorb a lot of the kick that comes from firing the gun. The Riffe Speargun is really well made and stands the test of time.The spearfishing wetsuits are super comfortable and easy to get on and off, add this to the great camo patterns and you have a great suit.
